What NeXTSTEP was, was the completion of turning some of that (Xerox PARC) vision into a reality. Incorporating the world’s first true commercial object oriented system, NeXTSTEP, and really for its time, being the most networked system in the world when it came out.

(of Xerox PARC) They were very far ahead in their thinking. They didn’t have it right. The stuff they had done wasn’t really right. But its the germ of the idea of all three things was there. And the three things were: Graphical User Interface, Object Oriented Computing and Networking.

(of NeXT) The machines were the best in the world. Believe it or not, they are selling on the used market today in some cases for more that we sold them originally.

(of NeXT) We knew we’d be the last company that made it (hardware and software) or the first that didn’t. We were right on that edge. And we thought we’d be the last one that made it, but we were wrong. And that pretty much put an end to any companies trying to do that.
